There was a lot of damage to external engine parts, but it was limited to
anything that was rubber or plastic. All metal parts appeared to be ok
except for having the paint burned of and subsequently rusting. This
was a factor for the chrome dress up parts that were ruined.
I removed the engine and disassembled the major components. The
heads had a recent valve job and looked brand new. The cylinders
looked good, but I could tell that the engine had a number of miles on it as
it did have a ridge at the top of the cylinders. I replaced the oil
pump, the timing chain, the water pump, and reassembled the engine with all
new gaskets. The carb was rebuilt, and the alternator replaced.
Here are some more pictures of the engine damaged from the fire, followed
by pictures of the cleanup and reassembly.
Of significant note, this is the original engine. The factory
stamped a partial VIN into the flat area behind the intake. This
stamping shows 8R 168356. The 8 is for 68, the R is for the assembly
factory at San Jose, and the 168356 is the consecutive unit
number.
